Napoleon marries Josephine. The Eugenics movement legalizes involuntary sterilization. The first Ford Mustang rolls off the assembly line and Barbie hits the runway as a fashion model. And the first female Cadet enters West Point.  And Grace's husband Nathan  Birnbaum dies at 100.  aka George Burns.

1796 Napolean marries Josephine.

1858 Albert Potts received a patent for the mailbox. It comprised a simple metal box designed to attach to a lamppost. By August, these boxes were found along the streets of Boston, Mass., and New York City, N.Y.

1907  First involuntary sterilization law is enacted in Indiana. Part of the Eugenics movement.

1917  Pancho Villa crossed the US border and attacked a small town in New Mexico. President Wilson sent in the army to capture Villa Dead or alive. They failed but this Excursion was the first military employment of mechanized vehicles including automobiles and planes.

1926  Bertha Landes elected 1st woman mayor of Seattle

1931  Ida B. Wells-Barnett crusading reporter died

1945  Carrie Chapman Catt died suffrage leader and founded the League of Women Voters.

1969  the Smothers Bros show was canceled by CBS After Joan Baez dedicated a song to her husband who was in jail for objecting to the draft.

1974 Last Japanese soldier, a guerrilla operating in Philippines, surrenders, 29 years after World War II ended

1975  work began on the Alaskan Pipeline.

1976 West Point Military Academy accepts its first female cadet

1996 Nathan Birnbaum (George Burns) dies at 100. Goodnite Gracie.
