While reading the Sunday want ads (3 pages minus medical jobs and trades = 1 page), the TV announcer mentioned that our area of Florida is down 156,000 jobs in a year, and it's going to get worse.
A man who has been homeless and jobless for many years now has a job, home and his family back. They sponsored a Thanksgiving dinner for the homeless last week... Over 300 people turned up, many were turned away. Even ministeries and charitable groups are already out of mney.
I changed stations. "You, too, can become a millionaire if you follow our program. Here's the founder who averages one million a week!" Is there something wrong with this picture?
Like most, I clip coupons, buy the grocery stores' own brand (after I read the disclosure on the label to make sure it's not made in China or...). There's a new website www.groceriesdirtcheap.com. Ruth has become famous, and for a $15 a month subscription fee, you could save up to 80% on groceries using her techniques. They blog, too and one woman is aflaot in lots of shampoo, soap and sale items!
Last June I closed a business account, secured by a CD which I had opened for my son. I CLOSED it, right? I have the papers to prove it. In July I opened what I thought was an ad from the bank. Somehow, a computer had reopened the account, charged a $10 monthly fee plus a $100 per overdraft because there was no CD to cover it. I went to my banker who referred to it as a "glich" and dismissed it.
Last week another envelope arrived. The "closed" account had again been opened. This time it charged not only the fee and the overdraft but interest, and it showed I owed $943.60! You don't want to know about my banker's phone conversation, but it had to do with who in the bank would take the loss...
Yes, I went home and hid under my bed working out a common sense approach to today's economy. I considered applying for the job of Senior Irregular Warfare Analyst. It's gotten that bad.
